Coventry Bookbinders Invests in City e

Midlands-based Coventry Bookbinders has announced its first move into perfect binding with an order for a Wohlenberg City e Edition 6000 system, purchased through UK distributor MAN Roland GB.

The highly automated City e is capable of producing both hot melt and PUR adhesive binding, and can handle publications ranging from 2mm to 50mm in thickness at up to 6,000 cycles per hour. The Coventry Bookbinders machine will be equipped with 16 feeders, and the build will incorporate a 90 degree turn in the binding line – a space saving feature that allows the system to be installed into a smaller space. The machine incorporates a three-knife trimmer and compensating stacker.

Commenting on the order, Karl Henly, managing director of Coventry Bookbinders, said, “We have been considering a move into perfect binding for some time. The level of enquiries that we have been receiving recently really forced us to take action, so we set out to review products from the three leading suppliers – Kolbus, Muller Martini and Wohlenberg.

“We were very impressed by the Wohlenberg City e product, and also by the support and enthusiasm of the MAN Roland team. Once installed, the system will be on-line to Wohlenberg in Germany, which means that they can provide immediate assistance should we encounter any difficulties, and also means that they can download software upgrades directly into the on-board computer.

“The Wohlenberg Navigator SE computer control system provides an excellent graphical user interface. It controls all motor-driven adjustments within the binder, and means that we can keep re-setting times down to a minimum. We can even enter new job information into the computer while the current job is still being produced. The system also provides for signature recognition, which means that we can immediately detect a problem if the wrong signature has got into the wrong feeder,” added Karl.

Spine preparation on the City e is handled by a high-performance 6.2 kW milling motor and frequency controlled notching or multiple knife head. The addition of the Wohlenberg City e at four-year-old Coventry Bookbinders further extends the capabilities of the company. Currently it provides saddle-stitching, guillotining, drilling, folding, shrink-wrapping, and hand work services to printers throughout the Midlands and further-a-field.
