Newbury Weekly News Adds to Mailroom

Second Schur Stacker to Provide More Flexibility Independent newspaper producer the Newbury Weekly News Group has recently installed a second Schur A600 stacker and packing line within its mailroom facility. Additional Schur Golden Gripper conveyor product has also been added to position both stackers away from the company's Schur A855 inserter product, providing for more working area on inserts.

Schur, the Danish supplier of mailroom equipment, which is distributed in the UK by manroland GB, sold its first products to the Berkshire based publisher and contract printer in 1988. This equipment was replaced in 2005, with the purchase of two pick-up stations, an A855 inserter, an A600 stacker and packing line.

Commenting on the latest addition to the mailroom, Operations Director at Newbury, Paul Jordan, said: "The additional stacker gives us more options in the mailroom. It's all about flexibility and efficiency. We can now insert off-line, for example, and still keep the press running to the two stacker units. This addition has also given us the opportunity to re-site both of the stackers. We will now have a more streamlined mailroom, and have a more suitable working area for the inserting machine.

"Having just one stacker and packing line meant that our bottleneck was on packing - that was governing the speed of the press. This new addition means that we will be able to run the press faster.

Schur"We certainly had no hesitation in going back to Schur for this latest extension to the mailroom system. The equipment provided is very solid and of excellent quality - you could say it's even over engineered."

The Newbury Weekly News print room runs 24-hour shifts from Tuesday through to Friday, and a day shift on Monday. The site produces its own Newbury Weekly News (28,000 print run) and provides a contract print service for a wide range of other titles, including: Daltons Weekly (60,000+), Isle of Wight County Pres (43,000), Maidenhead Advertiser, Henley Standard, Newquay Voice, Thameside & Glossop Reporter, Korean Post, Korean News, International Extra, and Philippines Express.

"We are still a family owned and independent newspaper producer, and very proud of that fact," added Paul Jordan. "We are also delighted to be able to provide a printing service for a significant number of other independent titles. Our speciality is high pagination, short print run publications."

Commenting on the installation on behalf of manroland GB, Andrew Latham added: "Naturally we are delighted to be able to extend the Schur system here at Newbury Weekly News. This site illustrates every day how flexible and robust Schur mailroom equipment is, and what the products are capable of producing."

The Schur A600 Stacker has been developed to meet market requirements for high stacking capacity and greater flexibility, especially when changing between different products and formats. All critical moving parts on the A600 are servomotor driven to ensure high speed, high pagination and adaptability. This design also provides for a significant reduction in air consumption. The system is capable of producing bundles with variable quantities and batches within the application range. A600 is able to handle up to 85,000 copies per hour.
